When your clothes don’t feel quite right
Often, we buy clothes simply because they’re in the stores, because they’re on trend, or because they look amazing on someone else. But when we put them on ourselves, something feels just slightly off. And then they end up in the closet, sometimes with the price tag still attached.
The funny thing is, this has nothing to do with taste or talent. It has to do with something almost nobody has ever been taught… their own personal style.
We think we don’t have a style. But we do
Ask someone, “What’s your style?” and nine times out of ten, you’ll get a vague answer. And yet, everyone has preferences. A kind of uniform. The outfits you reach for again and again because they feel good, feel safe, or simply work.
So why don’t we wear the rest of our clothes?
Because we’ve never learned why certain things work for us and others don’t.
Why we buy clothes we never wear
I know this from my own experience. For years, I bought clothes that looked good on me, felt comfortable, or that I simply loved. But rarely all three at the same time. And if one of those elements is off, you won’t wear it.
I call them the three checks:
- Does it suit you? (shape, color, proportion)
- Does it feel right? (comfort, movement, fabric)
- Does it feel like you? (preference, personality, energy)
If even one of these is off, the piece won’t feel like you. And that’s when it stays on the hanger.
Why your mood board doesn’t look like your wardrobe
When I ask people to collect images of clothing they absolutely love, the result is almost always different from what’s actually hanging in their closet.
Their heart says one thing. Their closet says something else.
That gap exists because we buy from what’s available, rather than from ourselves.
Fashion is not the same as style
Fashion tells you what you should be wearing right now. Style tells you what will always suit you.
True style is about:
- knowing what your body needs
- knowing what you feel good in
- knowing which clothes reflect your personality and energy
Many people think style is something you either have or you don’t.
I see it differently.
What’s usually missing isn’t a sense of style. It’s understanding why something works.
That’s not talent. It’s knowledge. And knowledge can be learned.
What it feels like when your style aligns with you
When you put on something that truly suits you, something simple but powerful happens.
You think: yes, this is me.
You move differently. You carry yourself differently. You stop second guessing yourself.
That’s the effect of a style that truly aligns with who you are.
Style doesn’t have to be complicated
It only becomes difficult when you don’t have direction. When you do know:
- which shapes flatter you
- which fabrics and fits you enjoy wearing
- which style matches your personality
…shopping becomes much easier. You need less clothing. You wear more of what you already own. And you look better than ever.
That’s what a style compass gives you: clarity, direction, and confidence.
